Explore Copenhagen’s many sights

Denmark’s capital is a modern city in rapid development, but with over a thousand years of history. Therefore, the city is rich in both experiences and impressions, and even the locals will never finish discovering new little gems. Every visitor can choose their own path through Copenhagen and go purposefully for architecture, castles, Michelin stars, cycle routes, shopping streets, sustainability, performing arts, art museums or.. open faced sandwiches.

Hard to choose where to begin your exploration? See our selected favorites here.

Right Around the Corner

When staying at Copenhagen Admiral Hotel, many of the city’s main attractions are just around the corner. They include e.g. The Royal Palace, where at 12 P.M. there is a changing of the guards. It’s performed in different variations and the most extensive takes place when the Queen is at the palace – and is called ‘Kongevagt’ (The King shift). Kongevagt starts with a parade from the barracks in Gothersgade at 11.27 A.M., and from there they march and pass the Round Tower and Kongens Nytorv to name a few sights, with full music from the drum corps. At 12 P.M., they march into the palace square, where the retiring guard hands over the incoming guard, the flag – a great experience for locals and tourists alike.

In addition, the Little Mermaid from H.C. Andersen’s fairytales, which is one of Denmark’s most famous sights, is within walking distance from the hotel. Here you can stroll along the water, past Toldboden, The Gefion Fountain and the beautiful Citadel, which is Northern Europe’s best-preserved fortress from the 17th century.

You will also find classics such as Nyhavn, the Royal Danish Opera and the Royal Playhouse, all of which offer cozy surroundings and citylife.

City break and sightseeing?

With the hotel’s location in the heart of Copenhagen, you are within walking distance of many of the biggest attractions in the city.
If you want to do some shopping, Strøget – Copenhagen’s pedestrian shopping street, is just a 10-minute stroll away. You can also visit one of the city’s shopping malls –
Fields or Fisketorvet. If the charm of the city and its architecture are what you’re looking for, you can rent a bicycle at the reception and cycle through the cobblestone streets of the city center and see all the charming old houses, or pop out to Ørestad to check out all the sleek modern buildings. Take a tour out to Flyvergrillen at Amager, and watch the planes take off and land at Copenhagen Airport. One of the absolute best ways of getting to know the city, in our opinion, is simply by wandering through its streets. You can do this yourself or by going on a guided tour where you learn all the quirky little stories that might surprise even locals! You can even hop on an electric scooter or on a Segway tour.

Whether it’s the small corners of the city’s parks or paintings on the walls – in, for example,  Christiania – Copenhagen has many special places that doesn’t necessarily make the usual sightseeing lists. Take a trip out Reffen, and enjoy a wide variety of street food, or stop by Lynetten, and watch the small boats sail in and out.

Here are several city guides if you want to discover the city on your own.
And there’s always the classics:

Botanical Garden
The Little Mermaid
The King’s Garden
Fredensborg Palace Gardens
Christiania

Rent a bicycle at the reception for DKK 200 per day

Active Holiday for the Whole Family

Fancy a more active holiday? You can bike and explore Copenhagen’s many neighbourhoods or you can bike north to the Deer Park, which in addition to being of historical significance with the lovely Hermitage Hunting Lodge, also has bike trails and a gorgeous view of Øresund.

If you want to stay closer to the city, you can hike up CopenHill and ski back down afterwards. You can also check out Konditaget Lüders in Nordhavn, it’s a unique parking structure with a playground and workout area – hop on the trampolines and enjoy the view of Øresund.

Sail Through Copenhagen

A tour through the canals of Copenhagen and feeling the wind in your hair is an adventure many don’t think is possible, but it is. From the water, you see the city from a different perspective and you’ll definitely have an experience to remember.

Rent a GoBoat and take along a picnic and enjoy a private sailing tour through the small canals. Or maybe sail to the Swedish island of Hven in Øresund, to take in a local whiskey tasting or perhaps you’d like to check out Flakfortet – you can get there from Nyhavn.

From May – October, you can sail with our own historic schooners, which are located in front of the hotel, where you help hoist the sails and enjoy the views of the Danish and Swedish coasts. You can read more about that here.

History and Culture

History and Copenhagen go hand in hand and the city is bursting with exciting history and culture. The hotel itself has witnessed many historical and cultural events – like the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. And places like our neighbours, Amalienborg Palace and The Citadel as well as Dragør (which is on UNESCOs tentative list) are just some of the things you can experience if you’re interested in history.

Many museums are right now offering online exhibitions and virtual tales of the city’s history, that you can take with you when you’re exploring the city.
