Christmas in Copenhagen
Although the days are now shorter and sunshine is limited, the abundance of Christmas lights and torches contribute to an atmosphere of light and warmth in Copenhagen. The city is rarely more beautiful and the Copenhagen Admiral Hotel has opted for a guide to a day of Christmas in Copenhagen. If the Christmas spirit has not yet enveloped you, it almost certainly will after this day in the city.
H.C. ANDERSEN’S CHRISTMAS MARKET AT AXELTORV
From mid-November until Christmas, the Axeltorv Square will be transformed to a large Christmas market, full of Christmas spirit and warmth. There will be all kinds of booths serving Christmas specialties and delicacies for both children and adults – and you could meet Hans Christian Andersen or perhaps, even, Father Christmas.
CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN THE CITY CENTRE
In conjunction with a visit to H.C. Andersen’s Christmas market, you really should take a stroll in the streets of the city centre, all of which have the most enchanting decorations for Christmas. On Saturday November 19th, all of the Christmas lights will be switched on, both on the streets and in the window displays of shops and stores. Christmas shopping suddenly comes even more enjoyable with Christmas hearts, stars and twinkling lights to encourage you – and the shops and stores often have some very good ”specials” available for Christmas.
GLÖGG – FOR INNER WARMTH
After a few hour in the cool winter air, it could be time to find some indoor warmth and where better than Hviid’s Vinstue (Hviid’s Wine bar), renowned for its classic glögg, which has been served since 1954 to generations of thirsty Christmas shoppers. The bar will serve the first glögg on November 11th at 11:00 hrs. and, while you enjoy the warmth and ambience of the lowceilinged rooms and the inner warmth provided by the glögg, it will be nigh on impossible not to soak up the Christmas spirit.
ICE RINK FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
After the flavourful enjoyment of glögg for the adults, it could well be time for a little fun and enjoyment for the kids. Each year, Frederiksberg Runddel is transformed in to a large, open air ice rink. Admission is free of charge so there is no hindrance for the whole family to have a couple of hours of real fun ”on ice” – ice skates are available for hire for DKK 50 if you do not have your own skates with you.
CHRISTMAS IN THE TIVOLI GARDENS
The best way to end the day is without doubt a visit to the Tivoli Gardens. Once again, the gardens will offer a fairy-tale atmosphere of authentic Christmas – just like in olden days – from mid-November until the end of December. The light, the beautiful decorations, the tasty delicacies and the wealth of entertainment for young – and older – make Christmas in Tivoli Gardens a must for all the family. You can visit more than 60 booths, listen to the Pixies’ Band, let the Lucia Parade enchant you and each evening there is an impressive illuminations show while the restaurants and cafés serve all kinds of Christmas specialities for your pleasure.
WARM WAFFLES AND HOT DRINKS
While you are in the Tivoli Gardens, we recommend a visit to the Waffle Bakery, close to the open-air stage. The Waffle Bakery has been in the same family for more than 100 years and is renowned for its heart waffles, with different fillings, and crisp Belgian waffles. A hot cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate is the perfect accompaniment to help you on your way home, warm and filled with Christmas spirit.
